I would just like to say, the whole NIN Year Zero thing, it's really scary, yo. I mean, yeah it's made up by Trent Reznor, but I can so see something similar happening for real, with the parepin and theocracy.

Well, it's pretty complicated, but the gist of it is this: It's viral marketing for Year Zero, the new NIN album. The premise is that about 15 years into the future, "there is no longer a distinct separation of Church and State. Perhaps due to an onslaught of bioterrorism attacks, the government has assumed totalitarian control and used the threat of future terrorist attacks to justify their absolute power" (from NinWiki). There's this drug, parepin, which the government puts in the water. It's supposed to be an immune booster, in case of bioterrorism, but some people are coming to believe that its purpose is much more sinister. They've noticed that it makes people more complacent, as well as lowering the sex drive and dulling emotions.
Oh, and people are starting to see something called The Presence -- a ghostly arm reaching down from the sky, leading to feelings of intense fear, insignificance, astonishment, and forgetfulness. This phenomenon is so far unexplained.
