Because in customer service, we can make time go faster!
I used to work in the tea room of a supermarket located in a very popular tourist town in the Lake District national park, in northern England. Recently, the town was affected by the very bad flooding across the England-Scotland border region. This is relevant because when I popped in there yesterday, they'd not been re-open long. One of my friends who still works there told me the following... ...the entire store, including the café, had been under approximately five feet of water when the river overflowed. It took about two days for the rain to stop and for the shop to be drained of water, and then of course there had to be a pretty extensive cleanup. Discounting the supermarket area itself there was several thousand pounds worth of damage - the furniture was all wooden and so had to be replaced (about 10,000 pounds), the dishwasher in the kitchen had to be recalled (another 20,000), not to mention all the other electrics, counters, and stock that had to be cleaned, repaired or thrown out. I'm sure you can imagine... Anyway, day 2 of the cleanup and things are still being thrown out and counted for the inventory so the company could re-order, and of course the place is still one hell of a mess. Dirt everywhere, electricians and carpenters are in with their equipment everywhere, and my friend, as she was washing down a wall not far from where a carpenter was, had on a little white mask thing. A customer then shows up, knocking on the door next to where my friend was, which was of course locked. She went on to yell at the staff that they shouldn't have the doors locked when it was opening hours...despite the fact she'd passed 'closed for refurbishment' signs on the way in. ( Edited for clarity: on the way into the complex where the supermarket is located, not into the building itself :)) When she was informed that the store was closed for cleaning and repairs - these being repairs she could see, given that the walls are made of GLASS - she said "but the flood was four days ago!" and then threw a hissy fit when told that due to health and safety reasons (and y'know, not actually having any food items in the building - they were the first things to go!) she couldn't come in anyway. Despite whining about how slow the company was to get back on its feet, she was still back after the re-opening anyway. People, eh? Current Mood: surprised |

Brittany Murphy---RIP---Age 32
House connection-appeared with Jesse Spencer in Uptown Girls. Actress Brittany Murphy dead at 32 By CHRIS WEBER ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES — Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in the sleeper hit “Clueless” and rose to stardom in “8 Mile,” has died in Los Angeles. She was 32. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Spokeswoman Sally Stewart said Murphy died at 10:04 a.m. today. She would not provide a cause of death, or any other information. Law enforcement sources said the actress died after going into cardiac arrest, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. today from a home that is listed as belonging to British screenwriter Simon Monjack, who is married to Murphy, spokesman Devon Gale said. Gale said one person was transported to a hospital. Messages left for Murphy’s manager, agent and publicist by the Associated Press weren’t immediately returned. Born Nov. 10, 1977 in Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Her career started in the early 1990s with small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for parts in “Girl, Interrupted,” “Clueless” and “8 Mile.” Her on-screen roles declined in recent years, but Murphy’s voice gave life to numerous animated characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox’s “King of the Hill” and Gloria the penguin in “Happy Feet.” She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming film, “The Expendables,” set for release next year. Her role in “8 Mile” led to more recognition, Murphy told The Associated Press in 2003. “That changed a lot,” she said. “That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not.” Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success. “When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me,” Murphy told the AP in 2003. “I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn’t stifle any of that. She always believed in me.” She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003’s romantic comedy “Just Married.” Kutcher tweeted this morning about Murphy’s death: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine,” Kutcher wrote. “My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon.” Current Mood: weird |

Massages
I'd like to buy a gift package at a local massage parlor, but I'm not familiar with any of them. Can anyone recommend a good massage for relieving work related stress? Any specific comments on either Art of Massage or Institute of Massage Therapies? Thanks! |

Near a Hancock Fabrics store?
I know it's right before Christmas but if you've got a few bucks left for stash enrichment, tomorrow Hancock has a one-day sale on Kona cotton solids for $2/yard (usually $5.99). In-store only. |

More on the search for an International auxiliary language (IAL)
Esperanto, born in the 1870s, had problems that quickly became obvious. Its inventer, Zamenhof, reluctantly proposed revisions in 1894 that his followers rejected. It's a shame they did: Esperanto might have grown from Old Esperanto to Middle Esperanto to Modern Esperanto in a few decades, and we would all be learning Esperanto in elementary school today. Esperanto's problems include an alphabet with unique characters and a gendered grammar that, if you're charitable, is quaintly old-fashioned but, if you're blunt, is sexist. I can't imagine it being accepted as an International auxiliary language (IAL) without addressing those flaws. Alas, Esperantists may have killed all hope of progress for Esperanto in 1905 with a declaration that stated, among other things, that the basis of the language should remain the Fundamento de Esperanto ("Foundation of Esperanto", a group of early works by Zamenhof), which is to be binding forever: nobody has the right to make changes to it.Esperantists today seem to be divided between Raumists (who promote Esperanto as a language and culture deserving of respect for its own sake) and Finkavists (who promote Zamenhof's dream of Esperanto as the world's IAL). Because conservatives blocked reform of Esperanto, IAL liberals moved their allegiance to Ido, a major tweaking of Esperanto that still has advocates. But many Ido supporters moved on to Interlingua, which takes a different approach (see Comparison between Esperanto and Interlingua). From Interlingua's Wikipedia page: ...its vocabulary, grammar and other characteristics are largely derived from natural languages. Interlingua was developed to combine a simple, mostly regular grammar with a vocabulary common to the widest possible range of languages, making it unusually easy to learn, at least for those whose native languages were sources of Interlingua's vocabulary and grammar. Conversely, it is used as a rapid introduction to many natural languages. Interlingua is also unusual for being immediately understandable to hundreds of millions of people who speak a Romance language. Interlingua would be a great IAL for Europeans, Quebecers, and Central and South Americans, but it's not so useful for Asians, Africans, and English-speakers because it's not as simple as Esperanto, Ido, or Mondlango (the best proposal for an IAL today, IMHO). Strongly recommended reading: History of Esperanto, a short Wikipedia article that has some charming details about Zaminhof, and a little about Hitler, Stalin, and the Cold War U.S.A. being suspicious of IAL supporters. A link for Emma: Interlingua and the Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Landlord/tennant question
I live on the first floor of a duplex, and the owner lives upstairs. Am I at all responsible for shoveling the shared steps/porch/sidewalk or is that his responsibility to do or pay somebody to do? The apartment is rented through a management company run by my landlord's relatives who take care of the business end of his various properties, but I don't know how they handle things at properties where the owner doesn't live. I get frustrated because, while I like my landlord, he's a bit of a hermit. I have to get out to go to work, and I also interact with the neighbors (who are mainly owners of single family houses) who expect me to shovel and rake, etc. the way they do--but I'm just renting an apartment. I have been taking care of snow and leaves to some extent, but I'm curious to know if I'm really responsible for it. Does anybody know the rules? Current Mood: sore |

Story: For One More Chance, for arionrhod Title: For One More Chance, for arionrhod From: Your Secret Snupin Santa Summary: He didn't tell anyone where he was going that day, nor did he tell them what he was planning to summon. At best, they'd have called him mad; at worse they'd have locked him up for dabbling in such ancient, restricted arts. Not that he really cared. Remus was on a mission, and he'd do anything to get to Severus. Even risk his soul in a seemingly impossible wager with Death. Rated: Holiday Spice (R) Notes: Warnings: None, really... Sexual situations, some language Prompts: I combined two, with some slight modifications: 1. Fic - Remus survives because only silver can truly kill a werewolf, although regeneration takes several days. When he comes "back to life" he finds out Tonks and Severus are both dead, and that Severus wasn't a traitor after all. Having only married Tonks because he was grieving over Albus and Severus, whom he had loved secretly for years, Remus makes a daring decision - to use a Dark Magic he'd heard about during his years of wandering to pass into the afterlife and bring Severus back. The only problem is that he has a mere twenty four hours to convince Severus to return, or else they will both be trapped in limbo forever! Angst fine, but happy ending a must! 2. Fic - Remus has no memory of who or what he is; finding himself wandering alone in a cold, dark place, he stumbles upon a small house where a man lives alone. The stranger takes him in, albeit reluctantly, and as Remus is nursed back to health he finds that he develops feelings for his rescuer. Little does he know that this is no stranger, but Severus Snape, a man scorned and hated for his crimes. The amount they may have known each other before is up to the author, but I'd like to see a reluctant, possibly damaged Severus being slowly won over by Remus. Whether Remus regains his memories is up to you, but a happy ending, please! Word count: 9842 |
